How to add options to a menu item

💡

While you can offer options on your menu items, keep in mind that too many options makes it hard for customers to figure out what they want and gives them more decisions to make.

The best droppers keep their menu items straightforward and use options sparingly, if at all. The fewer decisions a customer has to make, the faster they’ll check out.

If you do want to offer different flavors, quantities, or sizes of a single item, you can add an Option group. In many cases though, it may be easier to create separate menu items for different sizes or flavors, so consider that before adding an option group.

If you're trying to create some type of an assortment pack where customers choose what goes in, read this article here.

  1. Click into your menu item

  2. Click Option groups

  3. Click + Create option group

  4. Setup

    1. Choose between Variation and Modifier

      1. Most common - choose Variation for flavors, quantities, sizes, or other distinct types of your item. Variations are displayed on order tickets and on your prep list.

      2. Very rarely - choose Modifier for customizations that you only need to see on individual order tickets. Modifications are NOT displayed on your prep list.

    2. Name your option group. For example, Flavor

    3. Add the options and any additional (or lesser) charge for each

      1. The price of the option is always added to the item’s base price

      2. If you want the option to be cheaper than the base, make the price negative. For example: if you're selling juices and want to offer an incentive for customers to bring their own bottle, the option could be "I'll bring my own bottle" for $-1.

When creating an option group, be sure to also turn on any rules that might apply.

  • Require at least one selection - customers must select at least one option before they can add the item to cart. If you’re selling donuts and asking your customer to choose a flavor, be sure to turn this on.

  • Allow for multiple selections - your customer can pick multiple options in the group. For example, if you're selling a 2 pack of bagels and letting customers choose which flavors, turn allow multiple on and require 2 selections.

  • Enable inventory for this group - when you add this item to a drop menu later, you will be able to set inventory limits on each option.

Optional settings

You’ll see 2 more optional settings at the bottom of the screen when creating an item.

Tax Rate - you can set a custom tax rate that will apply only to this specific item. Maybe you’re selling a merch item that has a different sales tax than food in your state. If you don’t set this, then your default tax rate will apply. (More on tax rates HERE)

Special instructions - turning this on allows customer to write in a note or request for the item. For example, if you’re selling personalized cakes, this can be where you ask customers to write what they want piped onto the cake.
