How Hotplate works
Last updated October 15, 2025
Drops are a newer way to sell food. We often get asked what a drop even is, and how Hotplate works!
How does Hotplate work? What is a "drop"?
Hotplate is pre-order based, which means customers can only order during drops. A drop is when a limited supply of product becomes available for purchase all at once.
Why is Hotplate built this way?
Drops are the most profitable and operationally sustainable way to run a food business. It’s also a model that is geared to help you grow. More on that here .
We’ve found that chefs and bakers see more consistent growth when their customers are prompted to purchase on a regular cadence -- like each week or every other -- and have a limited window in which to place their orders. That sense of anticipation and urgency drives sales and attracts new customers.
Can I let my customers order anytime, not just within a drop?
No, all orders on Hotplate happen through drops!
While having goods for sale all the time might sound convenient, "always-on" storefronts are way less efficient, especially if you don't have a brick and mortar. When you let customers order anytime they feel like it, you can't establish a clear ordering rhythm which makes it hard to plan production or create moments that draw customers back in.
With Hotplate, you can set that rhythm effortlessly. When someone subscribes to your storefront, they’ll get a text every time orders open, and you control all the details in advance: open/close times, inventory, and pickup windows.
Can I have a drop open indefinitely?
Drops require and open and close time, but there's some flexibility. You can leave your drop open for an extended period and offer multiple pickup windows.
Most droppers on Hotplate use the 'Duplicate +1 week' button to quickly tee up the same drop for the following week in just a few clicks. No need to put in the same details every time.
